1983 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup Final

1983 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup Final

Date: January 22, 1983

Ground: Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

The India-Australia rivalry came to a head during the 1983 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup Final. The India side was riding high on their emerging talent in ODIs and produced a spirited performance. Batting first, Australia scored 222 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

Led by Kapil Dev and Madan Lal, the Indian bowlers were pretty economical. Kapil Dev, who had proved himself as a good all-rounder, took 3 wickets for 33 runs.

Chasing 223, India had to depend on their top-order batsmen. Even after the setbacks, captain Kapil Dev’s 46 runs helped keep the chase alive. But the Australians, with Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson at their nerve-tipping with the ball, held strong. India fall 13 runs short, score 210/9. The close finish had the fans on the edge of their seats and kick-started a rivalry that will thrive for decades to come.

2001 Kolkata Test: Return to the historic Eden Gardens

Date: March 11-15, 2001

Venue: Eden Gardens, Kolkata

One of the best Test matches in cricketing history, this match showed India’s great resilience and the play of some cricketing stalwarts like VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.

Batting first, led by Steve Waugh, Australia scored 445 thanks to Matthew Hayden’s 97 and a solid middle-order partnership. Harbhajan Singh took a hat-trick, becoming the first Indian to do so in Test cricket.

India replied with 171, and Australia enforced the follow-on, which followed with a masterclass in courage and determination. On his birthday, VVS Laxman (281) and Rahul Dravid (180) stitched together a 376-run stand that turned the game on its head.

In the fourth innings, Australia went chasing for 384 to get bowled out at 212. Again, Harbhajan Singh shone in bowling by taking 6 wickets, and India’s 171-run triumph remains an epitome of their fighting spirit.

Date: March 23, 2003

Venue: Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg

It was the final of the 2003 ICC World Cup-a much high-profile match played between the two cricketing giants of the world. With Ricky Ponting at the helm, Australia reaffirmed their dominance through a peerless batting display.

Australia raised a massive 359/2 in 50 overs, Ponting remained not out on 140 of 121 deliveries with 8 sixes and 4 fours. Damien Martin was his perfect teammate with his exceptional display of 88.

Under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, India faced an uphill battle. Despite a brilliant start by Virender Sehwag, who scored a brilliant 82, India buckled under the pressure and were bowled out for 234 in 39.2 overs. Glenn McGrath’s 3/52 and Brett Lee’s blistering spell sealed Australia’s 125-run victory, giving them their second consecutive World Cup title.

2008 Sydney Test: Controversial thriller

Date: January 2-6, 2008

Australia declared their innings at 401/7 and set India a 333-run target. But the rest of the match would be marred by umpiring howlers and a truly shocking “monkey gate” controversy involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds.

The Indian batsmen could not save the team, and they folded for just 122 runs. Michael Clarke changed the game scenario by picking up 3 wickets in 5 balls to decide the match in Australia’s favor. This is another interesting episode in the long rivalry.
